What is Drivers CPC Training?
Drivers CPC training, Driver CPC training or Driver Certificate of Professional Competence training as it’s also known, a legal requirement for anyone wanting to drive a bus, coach, or lorry professionally.
It ensures drivers have the highest standards road safety, adhere to industry regulations, and are compliant with UK transport legislation. The Driver CPC was introduced in 2008 under a European Union directive that sought to increase things like road safety, professionalism and environmental awareness amongst LGV & PCV drivers in the industry. If you drive one of the vehicles covered by CPC driver training without having a Driver CPC, you can be fined up to £1,000.
What Types Of Driver CPC Training Are There?
There are two types of Driver CPC Training, Initial Driver CPC Training and Periodic Training. The Initial Driver CPC qualification is a two-part test (Module 2 and Module 4) that new professional drivers must complete to obtain their Driver Qualification Card (DQC) which allows them to drive vehicles commercially.
Module 2 consists of a case studies test, assessing candidates’ knowledge of real-life scenarios, and module 4 seeks to show candidates’ practical knowledge by focusing on vehicle safety, including a walk-around vehicle safety check. Initial Driver CPC training is for anyone who wants to drive a lorry, bus, or coach for hire and reward, and who did not hold the relevant entitlement on their licence before September 9th, 2009, for lorry entitlements and September 9th, 2008, for bus entitlements.
Periodic Driver CPC training is for drivers who hold their DQC who need to fulfil the 35 hours of training every five years that is legally required to keep their DQC valid.
Who should go on a CPC Drivers Course
Our Driver CPC Course is typically taken by people who drive a lorry, bus, or coach as the main part of your job. You also need to undertake 35 hours of periodic training every 5 years to maintain your qualification.
- Professional drivers of heavy goods vehicles (HGVs), buses, and coaches.
- This applies to drivers whose primary job involves driving these types of vehicles.
- If you drive commercially, you will need a Driver Qualification Card (DQC).

Having ‘acquired rights’ means that you did not have to take the Driver CPC initial qualification because of your existing driving experience
